Can Sodium Abundances of A-Type Stars Be Reliably Determined from Na I 5890/5896 Lines?

An extensive non-LTE abundance analysis based on Na I 5890/5896 doublet lines was carried out for a large unbiased sample of ~120 A-type main-sequence stars (including 23 Hyades stars) covering a wide v_e sin i range of ~10--300 km/s, with an aim to examine whether the Na abundances in such A dwarfs can be reliably established from these strong Na I D lines. The resulting abundances ([Na/H]_{58}), which were obtained by applying the T_eff-dependent microturbulent velocities of \xi ~2--4 km/s with a peak at T_eff ~ 8000 K (typical for A stars), turned out generally negative with a large diversity (from ~-1 to ~0), while showing a sign of v_e sin i-dependence (decreasing toward higher rotation). However, the reality of this apparently subsolar trend is very questionable, since these [Na/H]_{58} are systematically lower by ~0.3--0.6 dex than more reliable [Na/H]_{61} (derived from weak Na I 6154/6161 lines for sharp-line stars). Considering the large \xi-sensitivity of the abundances derived from these saturated Na I D lines, we regard that [Na/H]_{58} must have been erroneously underestimated, suspecting that the conventional \xi values are improperly too large at least for such strong high-forming Na I 5890/5896 lines, presumably due to the depth-dependence of \xi decreasing with height. The nature of atmospheric turbulent velocity field in mid-to-late A stars would have to be more investigated before we can determine reliable sodium abundances from these strong resonance D lines.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in Publ. Astrometric Detection of Double Gravitational Microlensing Events

If a gravitational microlensing event is caused by a widely separated binary lens and the source approaches both lens components, the source flux is successively magnified by the individual lenses: double microlensing events. If events are observed astrometrically, double lensing events are expected to occur with an increased frequency due to the long range astrometric effect of the companion. We find that although the trajectory of the source star image centroid shifts of an astrometric double lensing event has a distorted shape from both of the elliptical ones induced by the individual single lens components, event duplication can be readily identified by the characteristic loop in the trajectory formed during the source's passage close to the companion. We determine and compare the probabilities of detecting double lensing events from both photometric and astrometric lensing observations by deriving analytic expressions for the relations between binary lensing parameters to become double lensing events. From this determination, we find that for a given set of the binary separation and the mass ratio the astrometric probability is roughly an order higher than the photometric probability. Therefore, we predict that a significant fraction of events that will be followed up by using future high precision interferometeric instruments will be identified as double lensing events.Comment: total 6 pages, including 4 figures and no table, ApJ, submitte

Online communities allow problem drinkers to seek help anonymously without the judgement present in the face-to-face world. This article investigates peer to peer online support in an online community of self-identified problem drinkers. A content analysis was performed on a Stop Drinking Reddit.com community and 26 themes of interaction, belonging to 9 categories were identified as key interactions likely to provide value to those seeking to instantiate or maintain sobriety. These themes were arranged into a conceptual model consisting of three dimensions of interaction namely: goal-based interaction; relationship-based interactions; and platform-interactions. The conceptual model created by this research should help those in recovery utilize online communities more effectively and provide insight into how peer to peer online social support can be deliberately utilized to promote sobriety

    Image multi-level-thresholding with Mayfly optimization

    Get PDF
Image thresholding is a well approved pre-processing methodology and enhancing the image information based on a chosen threshold is always preferred. This research implements the mayfly optimization algorithm (MOA) based image multi-level-thresholding on a class of benchmark images of dimension 512x512x1. The MOA is a novel methodology with the algorithm phases, such as; i) Initialization, ii) Exploration with male-mayfly (MM), iii) Exploration with female-mayfly (FM), iv) Offspring generation and, v) Termination. This algorithm implements a strict two-step search procedure, in which every Mayfly is forced to attain the global best solution. The proposed research considers the threshold value from 2 to 5 and the superiority of the result is confirmed by computing the essential Image quality measures (IQM). The performance of MOA is also compared and validated against the other procedures, such as particle-swarm-optimization (PSO), bacterial foraging optimization(BFO), firefly-algorithm(FA), bat algorithm (BA), cuckoo search(CS) and moth-flame optimization (MFO) and the attained p-value of Wilcoxon rank test confirmed the superiority of the MOA compared with other algorithms considered in this wor
